Safety First!!
All trappers know about dangers on the line, but we all have a tendency to forget about them concentrating on the task at hand, looking for sign, and pinch points to set traps, on water and land sets.
Water trapping i think is worse than on land. Think about walking or climbing up and down wet slippery loose muddy banks. You can fall and twist a ankle, break a leg.
What about the hidden dangers that are not even hidden? that could be Deadly in a heart beat. I talking about that small dead stick laying vertical on the bank, waiting to take you for a ride when you step on it, sliding you down the hill out of control tossing you to the waters edge. You did not even get wet. But you landed on two small chewed off beaver tree stubs, one penetrated your right leg and the other went into your ribs.
What about falling into a old beaver bank den while walking along the river bank? You only went in a foot and a half on flat ground with solid land all around you, but there was a chewed stick that speared you calf muscle with all your body weight down inside the hole you made.
These things can, and have happened.
Just wanted to get you thinking out side of the box of normal dangers that you try to avoid, like crossing a raging river, pinching your fingers in a trap, folding up your knife before you put it in your pocket.
Slow down, be alert and think about what you are doing.
BE SAFE!!
Your love ones depend on you!!
Happy Trapping Season
