Was thinking about taking my cats to this sale this year. Does anyone know how many buyers show up at the sale? It know its not the best sale for cats but it is the only one I can make it to. Do cats sell very well or is there so few it don't attract buyers so the buyers that are there get a bargain? Just curious have always sold to local buyer never sent any furs thru an auction before.

Last year was the first year that USRT held an auction in Rupert. Since it is in my back yard, I sold my cats and coyotes there. I sold 5 cats last year, 2 to Darold Roldman of Montana and 3 to Dennis Heck from Caldwell. I believe there were about 5 - 6 buyers present but in my case those were the two high bidders for my cats. From what I saw the price depended on the quality of the cat and the put up. The cost of selling at this auction is the membership dues plus 5% of the selling bid. You also have the option of placing a minimum price on your cats and if it doesn't bring at least that you will have the option to sell anyway and pay the 5% or no sale it and pay 1% of the bid. If you sell, you pay the commission to USRT up front and then collect the money from the individual buyers who will be set up after they read the bids. From what I've seen this year on the cats - don't expect to see the money that was being paid last year. Of the auctions held so far this year I've seen where a few 6-800 dollar cats were sold but I think those were the cream of the crop. After that they went down hill real fast price wise. I have sold both ways, to individual buyers and at the auction, and generally I feel I get a better deal at the auction even after the commission due to the bidding competition but there are exceptions. Also one of the "perks" at the auction is that you have a chance to meet and visit with other like minded people and pick up some trapping tips and compare your put up to others. I've learned a lot about putting up fur by talking to others and comparing my stuff to the others, which in my case I feel put more dollars in my pocket.

Thanks for the information, I know prices have went way down this year so I'm not expecting what I got last year . But I do want to get as much as I can for the cats I got. It would be neat to see other trappers fur handling never really spent much time looking at how other trappers put there fur up. I'm one that has always tried to keep my activities on a low key so i didn't attrac any attention.

Going to the local buyer tomorrow after I get them tagged and see what he will give me for them. I got a average in mind and if he don't meet that I will probably be there. Have always wanted to go but just never have.

Well no auction for me again this year, sold my cats for a $381 average and it the small one and one C grade one was taken out my average would have been $441 I was hoping for a $400 average so I figure I did as good as I would have anywhere and sold them all.

Good for you! I'm glad you were satisfied with the returns. How many did you have and what size were they and how did they look? I've got two to go to the sale with and wondering how I should be thinking for a minimum price on them. They are a 45" and a 43" tom. The one on the left was a December cat and the one on the right was a February cat.

I read this morning on another site that at the Arizona sale there were a few that went in the 600 range, a few more in the 4-500 range and a lot that went less than that. I too hope the price holds out a little longer.

Maybe them good looking coyotes you put up will make up for the poor cat market.
